Windham's urban center, Willimantic, gained fame in the 19th century for its high quality cotton thread, and became known as America's Thread City. Windham County boasts a charming rural, agrarian ambiance. It's often referred to as the Last Green Valley in America's crowded Northeast corridor.
Located in eastern Connecticut, the area is sometimes referred to as "New England's Quiet Corner.
Nearby counties: to the North is Worcester County, Massachusetts, and to the East is Providence County, RI. On the Southeast is Kent County, RI and the Southwest is New London County. The western border is with Tolland County, CT.
